College & Transition Program

The Bayhill High School College &  Transition Program utilizes a student/family focused model designed to ensure successful transition from school to adulthood.  Since transition looks different for each student, the program is designed to offer many options based on the individual needs and interests of the student.  These options include post-secondary education (2-year and 4-year college), vocational training, continuing and adult education, independent living skills, and supported employment services.

Learning About College and Transition

During their Bayhill career, students are exposed to life beyond Bayhill as a regular part of the school culture.  Within the context of the classroom, students:

  • Bayhill graduation requirements
  • Learn the A – G requirements (requirements to apply to the California State and University systems)
  • Understand how to look at and interpret their transcripts
  • Take the Aspire (Pre-ACT)
  • Take the Strong Interest Inventory to learn about their possible career interests
  • Reflect upon their own college readiness
  • Learn how to write a personal statement
  • Understand the basics of the laws that affect people with disabilities in higher education

Additionally, each year, Bayhill hosts a comprehensive College & Transition Fair where representatives from colleges, art schools, independent living programs, and work and Gap Year programs are available to speak with students and their families about the various options available for post-high school life.

Including Families in Post-Secondary Decisions

Juniors and Seniors and their families meet individually with the College Advisor and Transition Coordinator to develop a post-high school plan.  On going meetings ensure that they have the appropriate support to make a smooth transition from Bayhill to adulthood.

Life Skills Course

Life Skills course includes many transition activities designed to encourage students to explore their maximum potential while learning the skills necessary to transition from school and parental care into adult independence.  The course is designed to teach students how to incorporate Life Skills related knowledge into everyday behavior.  Students are exposed to information and skill building exercises geared towards personal, social, and emotional development.

The goals of the Life Skills course are to educate and empower students to develop their Individual Transition Plan (ITP).
