Writing Course I

Writing Course I is focused on writing well developed and grammatically sound sentences of increasing complexity. Sentences are the foundation of writing and well-crafted sentences help convey meaning and make our writing interesting. This course is about getting sophisticated with sentence structure and varying sentence starters. Topics covered include:

  • Components of a Sentence
  • Expanding Sentences
  • Diversifying Sentences
  • Types of Sentences

Writing Course II

Building on sound sentence structure, students create paragraphs for a variety of purposes. Focus on building well-developed paragraphs that stay on point and support the topic. Students bring what they've learned in the first writing course to build cohesive paragraphs with variety of well-crafted sentences. Topics include: 

  • Components of a Paragraph
  • Types of Paragraphs
  • Planning and Organizing
  • Drafting and Revising

Writing Course III

Taking what they've learned in courses I and II, students advance to composing multi-paragraph essays. Students develop thesis statements, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion that support a central idea. Building upon strong sentences and sound paragraphs, focus will be place on introductory paragraphs and conclusions, as well as connecting sentences with smooth transitions. Students will also spend more time on the process of revision. Topics include:

  • Components of an Essay
  • Types of Essays
  • Revisions
  • Essay Writing & Workshopping Focus
