Our Approach

Individualized Curriculum

Bayhill individualizes our academic curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners. Whether a student has dyslexia, ADHD, or another learning difference, our teachers get to know each student's individual learning profile and adapt instruction to provide both appropriate support and academic challenge.

Embedded Accommodations

At Bayhill, accommodations are naturally embedded into the school day. Students may receive additional time to complete assignments, tests, and projects or take tests in a quiet space or with a reader. Lessons incorporate auditory, visual, written, and hands-on approaches to support different ways of learning.

We also help students understand which accommodations work best for them and develop the self-advocacy skills to ask for what they need.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology is integrated throughout the Bayhill curriculum. Students use their computers and Google Apps for Education to complete, organize, and submit assignments and have access to Bookshare and other digital and audio text formats.

Our 21st Century Learning class teaches students how to use technology strategically to support their learning. Students develop practical skills and learn to identify the tools that work best for them- building greater independence at Bayhill and preparing for college and the workplace.

Effective Remediation

For students who need additional support, Bayhill provides research-based interventions designed to strengthen foundational skills in reading, writing, and math.

Our reading instruction uses an Orton-Gillingham-based approach to develop skills in areas such as decoding, vocabulary, fluency, word recognition, and spelling. Bayhill's Foundational Math class provides targeted instruction for students with dyscalculia and other challenges with mathematical concepts and fluency.

Specialists in speech and language and educational therapy are also available to work with students who benefit from additional individualized support.

Supportive Teachers

For students who have struggled in the past, it’s a relief when they finally feel that someone has their back. Our teachers build trusting relationships with students based on mutual respect. Because Bayhill is a small school, teachers get to know their students well- not only how they learn, but who they are. Students and staff work together to create a positive school culture where students feel known, supported, and encouraged to grow.

“My son with ADHD is a sophomore (at Bayhill) and is thriving. Every kid brings a chromebook to school every day.  All assignments are online and are turned in online, so no missing papers.  There is an “Academic Support” period each day where a teacher checks in with each kid to look at their current homework status in the online system  and see which assignments need to be completed or turned in, and then finish them in that class…He is taking all the classes he would have taken at BHS but now he’s making A’s and B’s and he loves Chemistry and Math! ” – Bayhill Mom
